MCP Server Setup
Use the Baseshift MCP server to connect coding agents and AI-powered IDEs to Baseshift. Once connected, an agent can work with your dubs, snapshots, clones, and policies using the same permissions as your Baseshift user.
Configure Your IDE
Add the hosted server to your IDE's MCP configuration:
{
"mcpServers": {
"baseshift": {
"url": "https://app.baseshift.com/mcp"
}
}
}
baseshift is the name your IDE shows for the server. You can change it.
Restart your IDE or reload MCP servers. On connect, the IDE opens a browser so you can sign in to Baseshift and approve access. After you approve, Baseshift is available to the agent.
The MCP server previously started with baseshift mcp is deprecated. Replace that command / args entry with the URL above. For terminal and CI workflows, use the Baseshift CLI guide.
What You Can Do
The MCP server exposes all of Baseshift's core functionality, so an agent can run it directly. Identify a dub by name or UUID. If the same name exists in more than one organization, include the organization token.
Dubs. List the dubs you can access, inspect one, check whether replication is ready, and run a source connection health check. With permission to manage the organization, the agent can also create a dub or update its source connection.
Snapshots. Start a snapshot, list the snapshots for a dub, and check whether one is still creating, ready, or failed. Snapshot creation continues in the background, so the agent can check status until it finishes.
Clones. Ask your agent to run queries, start a server clone from a ready snapshot, list the clones you have running, and stop them when you are done. On Baseshift Cloud, the CLI is required to connect to the clone through a secure tunnel. On a self-hosted dub, the agent returns a connection string you can use directly, so the CLI is optional. Local clones allow pulling and running the Docker image locally.
Policies. Read or apply a dub's masking and subset policies. A change can be validated first, then applied, and the dub can be restarted afterward.
